On Saturday 26th November 2016, you are cordially invited to the triennial Merton College Winter Ball. Attire yourself in the finest white tie to step through our gatehouse, beyond which time stands still. It will be all that stands still this evening; sway through music-filled quads brimming with warming culinary delights, and whirl the night away before our headline stage with any drink your heart may desire in hand. Dance in marquees glittering with stars and bask in the splendour of Oxford’s oldest college. Here at Merton we’ve been partying together since 1264, it is our honour to welcome you into the fold!

Food & Drink

The quads of Merton College will be replete with some of the finest food & drink the city (and beyond) has to offer. Liquid nitrogen ice cream, alcoholic milkshakes and churros with hot chocolate with provide fitting treats for such a winter spectacle. Bustling stalls will be dishing up a diverse range of hot street food; authentic paella, Chinese dumplings and wood-fired pizza will join classics like fish & chips that will both warm and satisfy guests of all palates. A drink of your choice will never be far away too, whether it be a liqueur-laced coffee, one of your favourites on the rocks or a creation from our bespoke cocktail bar.

Formal dining

The sumptuous formal meal that precedes the Winter Ball is the perfect way to begin an evening of indulgence and revelry, with mouth-watering locally-sourced food served by the award-winning Oxford Fine Dining. The dinner will begin with a champagne reception in the 750-year old Front Quad, before moving towards the heart of the evening’s events, where the extravagant meal will be held. Delicious wines will accompany a carefully chosen seasonal menu to prepare diners to explore the wonders of the Ball on this very special winter’s night. Formal Dining is the most luxurious way to enjoy all that the Merton Winter Ball has to offer.

Bringing you the best of Oxford and beyond, the three venues will host a variety of acts, suiting all musical tastes. From the classiest jazz over dinner, to a nationally renowned headline act to take you into the early hours, our aim is to keep you dancing through the night. Oxford’s coolest funk and a cappella groups will get the evening going, and then for those of you with a will to never drop, a silent disco will have your favourite club DJs battling for your attention until dawn.

If you or your band would be interested in performing at the Ball please contact ball.entertainment@merton.ox.ac.uk to arrange an audition.

As you explore the birthplace of collegiate life, the entertainment evokes a setting stationary in time, whilst the world moves on around it. Conjurors, performers, and all the fun of The Fair nestle up against fire eaters, light shows, and the bizarre. Don’t expect congruity, don’t expect orthodox. Having tired yourself out on the rides or dance machines, recover your composure in the toasty shisha tent, relax in front of a dance spectacle, or experience a film or a ballet on our cinema screen.

The 2016 Merton Winter Ball is now Sold Out. The deadline for any name changes on tickets has now passed.
